Symonds to be sent home

andrew-symondsAustralian all-rounder Andrew Symonds is being sent home from the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in England for breaking team rules, Cricket Australia said here Thursday.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said the breaches of the team rules, some related to alcohol use, were the ‘final straw’ for the controversial allrounder.

Sutherland called a late night press conference here to make the announcement and he said captain Ricky Ponting was to address another press conference in London later Thursday to discuss the situation with Symonds.

Sutherland said Symonds, 33, broke a number of rules “in the last 24-48 hours” and CA were now organising flights to get him back to Australia. Symonds’ CA contract, which he retained only last month, was also under review, Sutherland said.
