A Monumental Projection Inspired by Water, Memory and Belonging

Vaiola takes its name from an area near Angela Tiatia’s home in Savai’i, Sāmoa, with the word translating to “water of life.” The title forms the emotional centre of the work, reflecting themes of migration, identity, longing and connection.

Projected across the grand exterior of the Museum of Contemporary Art, the installation features a vivid and immersive visual palette inspired by many of Tiatia’s signature artistic motifs, including:

  • Pearls
  • Oceanic imagery and flowing water
  • Fire and elemental energy
  • Tropical flowers
  • The female form

Through cinematic imagery and layered visual storytelling, the projection invites audiences into a deeply personal yet universally resonant meditation on memory, heritage and emotional belonging.

An Immersive Harbourfront Experience

Positioned at the heart of Circular Quay during Vivid Sydney, Vaiola becomes both a large-scale public artwork and a contemplative gathering space for visitors exploring the festival.

The installation is accompanied by an atmospheric original score from Corin Ileto, adding depth and emotion to the projection while enhancing the immersive nighttime experience along Sydney Harbour.

Against the backdrop of Sydney’s illuminated skyline, the MCA façade comes alive with movement, colour and reflection, creating one of the festival’s most memorable visual encounters.

Artist Statement – Angela Tiatia

“For me, Vaiola is about the emotional currents and tensions between longing and belonging. During Vivid Sydney, when the city comes to life and invites locals and visitors alike into shared celebration, the work can unfold at a massive scale while still holding an intimate space for connection and reflection.”
