An Interactive Playground of Sound, Light and Motion

Inspired by Sydney’s past, present and future, THERE, NOW, HERE is a living artwork powered by wind, motors and audience participation. The installation features an array of oversized horns, rotating sculptures, moving elements and whimsical structures that continuously shift and respond to their surroundings.

As components move through the air, they trigger and transform a rich soundscape made up of recordings and audio fragments collected from across Sydney’s history. The result is a constantly evolving composition where no two visits are ever the same.

Natural forces such as wind and weather influence the artwork throughout the day, creating a dynamic sensory experience that changes with every passing moment.

Create Your Own Sydney Soundtrack

Visitors are encouraged to become active participants rather than passive observers. Interactive elements allow guests to manipulate sounds and shape the installation’s evolving musical landscape.

Highlights include:

  • Interactive seesaws that transform movement into sound
  • Fader controls that adjust tempo, pitch and distortion
  • Kinetic sculptures that respond to environmental conditions
  • Layered audio recordings reflecting Sydney’s cultural history
  • A collaborative artwork shaped by every visitor who interacts with it

Each interaction leaves a sonic imprint, blending with previous contributions and creating an ongoing collaborative artwork shared by thousands of visitors throughout the festival.

Pause, Reflect and Explore

Beyond its playful elements, THERE, NOW, HERE also offers moments of calm and reflection. Comfortable bulbous seating areas are integrated throughout the installation, encouraging visitors to sit, listen and observe the interplay between movement, sound and light.

Whether you choose to actively participate or simply take in the atmosphere, the artwork creates a welcoming space for contemplation amidst the excitement of Vivid Sydney.

A Celebration of Sydney’s Past and Present

Through its layered soundscape and interactive design, THERE, NOW, HERE explores the relationship between memory, place and participation. Historical recordings merge with contemporary interactions, allowing visitors to experience Sydney’s stories in an entirely new way.

The artwork’s title reflects this journey through time—bringing together what was there, what exists now, and what can be created here through collective engagement.
