The Fringe of Infinity at Customs House Sydney

Step into a mesmerising world of light, geometry and perception as The Fringe of Infinity transforms the historic façade of Customs House during Vivid Sydney 2026.

Created by acclaimed Spanish artist Javier Riera, this immersive large-scale projection installation invites visitors to pause, reflect and explore the hidden mathematical patterns woven throughout nature and the universe.

Running nightly from 22 May to 13 June 2026, the installation illuminates one of Sydney’s most recognisable heritage buildings with evolving geometric forms inspired by the natural world, creating a meditative visual experience in the heart of Circular Quay.

A Vivid Sydney Projection Inspired by Nature

The Fringe of Infinity explores the extraordinary relationship between mathematics, nature and human perception. Using carefully mapped projection techniques, Javier Riera overlays the architecture of Customs House with shifting geometric forms inspired by natural patterns found throughout the universe.

Visitors will encounter visual references to:

  • The Fibonacci spiral found in shells and plant growth
  • The symmetry of flowers and natural formations
  • Hexagonal honeycomb structures
  • Organic mathematical patterns hidden in everyday life

The installation blurs the boundary between architecture and illusion, inviting audiences to reconsider the invisible structures that shape the natural world around us.

Immersive Soundscape by Luminecho

Accompanying the projection is an atmospheric soundscape created by musician, producer and sound designer Luminecho — also known as Javier Riera’s son. The resonant audio composition deepens the immersive experience, surrounding visitors with ambient textures that enhance the contemplative mood of the installation.

Together, the visuals and music create a calming yet thought-provoking journey through light, space and perception.

Customs House Reimagined

Located at the gateway to Circular Quay, Customs House becomes both canvas and collaborator in this stunning projection artwork. The building’s classical architecture interacts with the projected geometric forms, creating constantly shifting perspectives that change depending on where viewers stand.

The result is a living visual dialogue between heritage architecture, digital art and mathematical beauty.

A Highlight of Vivid Sydney 2026

As part of the Vivid Sydney Light Walk, The Fringe of Infinity offers a quieter and more reflective experience among the festival’s vibrant installations. Combining art, science, architecture and sound, it encourages visitors to slow down and reconnect with the patterns and systems often overlooked in everyday life.

Whether you are exploring Vivid Sydney for the first time or returning for another year, this free installation at Customs House promises one of the festival’s most visually elegant and intellectually engaging experiences.
