Weaving a sonic dream from just her voice and nylon-string guitar, Japanese singer-songwriter Ichiko Aoba has attracted a global cult following with her enchanting mix of psych-folk and breathy, hypnotic pop. Following the recent release of her spellbinding latest album, Luminescent Creatures, Aoba makes her Sydney Opera House debut for Vivid LIVE, performing new music and fan favourites from across her career.
Raised on music from Disney and Studio Ghibli films, and drawing inspiration from the world of her dreams, the classically trained guitarist made her debut in 2010 with Kamisori Otome and has since released a string of studio and live albums, including collaborations with Cornelius, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono. Billed as a “soundtrack for a fictional film,” Aoba’s critically acclaimed 2020 album Windswept Adan saw her expanding into cinematic dream pop, wedding her whispery voice and delicate playing to lush instrumentation.
With her uncanny ability to conjure strange worlds and intimate feelings, Aoba’s live shows – with the singer sometimes known to perform with her eyes closed – have become the stuff of myth. Don’t miss her.
