Step into a strange and glowing world of illusion, imagination and playful wonder at Flea Circus, an enchanting light installation arriving at Vivid Sydney 2026 in Barangaroo.

Created by acclaimed Dutch design studio Studio Toer, the interactive artwork transforms Sea Wall Lawn into a whimsical nighttime spectacle inspired by the bizarre travelling flea circuses that captivated audiences across Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Known for their beloved Vivid Sydney installations including Fish Are Jumping (2023), Bloom (2022) and Firefly Garden (2019), Studio Toer once again brings their signature blend of curiosity, humour and immersive storytelling to Sydney’s harbour foreshore.

A Magical Illusion Under the Night Sky

At first glance, visitors may notice flickers of movement dancing through the darkness — tiny glowing creatures seemingly floating, leaping and performing impossible acts beneath the night sky.

But look closer.

Are they really there?

Inspired by historical flea circuses, this installation plays with perception and the power of suggestion. Much like the original sideshow attractions, Flea Circus invites audiences to question what is real and what exists only in the imagination.

In centuries past, flea circuses amazed crowds with performances involving miniature sword fights, acrobatics, dancing fleas and tiny musical acts. Some used actual trained fleas, while others cleverly relied on hidden mechanics, magnets and theatrical illusion to convince audiences they were witnessing impossible spectacles.

Studio Toer reimagines this curious cultural phenomenon through light, movement and interactive visual storytelling, encouraging visitors to become part of the illusion themselves.

An Interactive Artwork About Belief & Imagination

Rather than presenting a traditional static light display, Flea Circus creates a playful psychological experience where imagination becomes central to the artwork.

The installation explores:

  • Illusion and perception
  • The relationship between audience and spectacle
  • The history of travelling curiosities and sideshows
  • The power of imagination and belief
  • Interactive light and movement

As visitors wander through the glowing installation, they are encouraged to slow down, observe carefully and embrace the mystery unfolding around them.

Studio Toer Returns to Vivid Sydney

Representing The Netherlands, Studio Toer has become a festival favourite thanks to their ability to transform public spaces into immersive worlds filled with light, playfulness and emotional connection.

Their works often combine technology, nature and human interaction to create installations that feel both futuristic and deeply nostalgic.

With Flea Circus, the designers continue their exploration of wonder and sensory storytelling, delivering an experience that is equal parts charming, surreal and thought-provoking.

Experience Flea Circus at Barangaroo

Located along the beautiful waterfront at Sea Wall Lawn, Barangaroo, Flea Circus is one of the many free installations lighting up Sydney during Vivid Sydney 2026.

Perfect for families, photographers, art lovers and curious night-time explorers, the installation offers a magical stop along the Vivid Light Walk and a chance to experience one of the festival’s most playful and imaginative works.
