A Living Street Art Experience

Afterimage brings together the raw energy of graffiti culture and the cutting edge of projection technology in one of Sydney’s most iconic public spaces. Over the opening nights of the festival, renowned Australian street artist Sofles will create a monumental 12-metre-high mural, painted live on stacked shipping containers in Tumbalong Park.

Inspired by the visual language of global graffiti culture and the industrial textures of urban environments, the mural is a tribute to the evolving identity of street art as both a public and international art form.

Live Creation & Public Engagement

Visitors are encouraged to attend during the live painting sessions on 19 and 20 May (12pm – 2pm), where they can watch the mural come to life in real time and engage directly with the artist process.

This rare behind-the-scenes opportunity allows audiences to witness the evolution of a large-scale public artwork from blank surface to completed mural before it is transformed each night into a digital experience.

Projection Mapping Transformation

Once completed, the mural is reimagined by US-based visual artist Chaske Haverkos, who applies advanced projection mapping techniques to animate the surface with light, motion, and layered visual storytelling.

The result is a constantly shifting visual experience where every brushstroke is enhanced, extended, and reinterpreted through digital projection, creating a seamless dialogue between physical paint and moving light.

A Collaboration of Art, Sound & Technology

As night falls, Afterimage becomes a fully immersive installation where sound and visuals merge. The artwork is accompanied by an original score from Play Audio Agency, enhancing the experience with atmospheric soundscapes that respond to the visual rhythm of the projection.

Each evening during Vivid Sydney Lights On, the mural transforms into a breathing, evolving artwork that shifts in real time, offering a new perspective with every visit.
