Tia Gostelow, a multi-talented Indigenous musician, has won the hearts of audiences across the country in just a few years. Moving effortlessly between folksy roots rock, sleek dancefloor jams, and crystalline pop, the emerging Queensland singer is one of Australia’s hottest young talents. Gostelow, fresh off the success of her third album, Head Noise, returns to the Sydney Opera House for an exciting Vivid LIVE premiere at the Utzon Room.
Gostelow was inspired to play music at the age of eight after seeing Taylor Swift perform live, and she was just 16 when her debut single, 2016’s ‘State of Art’, won Triple J’s inaugural Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative. In 2018, her eerie and hooky folk rocker ‘Strangers’ became a radio blockbuster and a platinum-selling ARIA single, while her highly praised first album Thick Skin went gold, received a National Indigenous Music Award nomination, and won the Queensland Music Award for Album of the Year. Gostelow’s follow-up, Chrysalis (2020), saw her shift to ’80s-inspired synth pop with dancefloor-ready tunes; on her most recent release, 2023’s Head Noise, the singer reduced her various musical influences into a compilation of wonderfully upbeat pop songs about the complexity of twenty-something life and love. It’s shapeshifting pop at its best, unified by Gostelow’s rich, dreamy vocals and impressive gift for melody.
This is Gostelow’s first visit at the Sydney Opera House since the First Nations showcase in 2019, and she makes an auspicious debut at Vivid LIVE. Do not be a stranger.
