From The Knife’s ethereal synth beats to the shapeshifting pop soundscapes of their solo work, Swedish avant garde alchemist Karin Dreijer – aka Fever Ray – has created a unique, uncompromising path through 21st century electronic music. After two decades of outrageously ambitious techno pop, the celebrated artist is set to make their long-awaited Australian debut with two gigs at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall for Vivid LIVE.
Fever Ray, with their mysterious masked visage and a voice that appeared to invoke the realms of the otherworldly, broke into the music scene in 1999 as one half of Swedish electronic pioneers The Knife, an experimental dance duo they co-founded with their brother Olof Dreijer. Following the group’s massively successful third album, Silent Shout, which Pitchfork rated the greatest album of 2006, Fever Ray released their self-titled debut in 2009, a modern classic of haunting, left-field electro pop that produced the songs ‘If I Had A Heart’ and ‘Keep the Streets Empty for Me’. It was followed by 2017’s transformative Plunge, which found Dreijer embracing their newfound LGBTQ identity through a set of irresistibly sensuous, exotic pop songs—including ‘To the Moon and Back’.
‘This Country’ sounded unlike anything on the music scene. Last year, Fever Ray returned with Radical Romantics, a co-production with Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Dreijer’s brother, Olof. Continuing Fever Ray’s radical investigation of identity and desire, the record, which includes such out-of-the-box pop jewels as ‘Kandy’, ‘What They Call Us’, and ‘Carbon Dioxide’, was acclaimed by many critics as their best work yet.
Fever Ray, an outstanding visual artist who brings their avant-garde sensibilities to the stage, is poised to give a live performance as exciting as their music.
