Devonté Hynes, a singer, songwriter, and producer with a gift for moving between R&B, indie, and experimental jazz, has helped shape an era’s vanguard pop, collaborating with artists such as Solange, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kylie Minogue, Sky Ferreira, FKA Twigs, A$AP Rocky, Haim, Florence and the Machine, and Mariah Carey, to name a few.
The London-born musician, known as Blood Orange, released four critically acclaimed full-length albums, including Cupid Deluxe (2013), Freetown Sound (2016), and Negro Swan (2018), which combined his love of classic ’80s funk, electro soul, hip-hop, West African pop, and chilled-out R&B to great effect. In the meantime, the classically trained pianist composed soundtracks for films by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name), Rebecca Hall (Passing), and Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver). worked alongside the legendary Philip Glass and surprised critics and audiences with Fields (2019), his forward-thinking, Grammy-nominated excursion into classical music.
Hynes returns to Australia for the first time in almost a decade, making his long-awaited Vivid LIVE premiere in the Concert Hall with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Hynes’ music delves into the intricacies and ambiguities of 21st century identity, including memory, trauma, despair, and anxiety, as well as the victories of vulnerable populations such as people of color, queer, and trans people, and where they intersect.
