No vacation to Sydney is complete without seeing the city’s most famous building. The nicest thing to do when visiting the Sydney Opera House is to go inside and watch an opera performance.

This is your opportunity to watch one of the most successful operas ever created by an Australian. Glyndebourne commissioned and premiered Hamlet, which was performed to great acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera of New York and the Adelaide Festival, and now it makes its Sydney Opera House debut.

Neil Armfield, one of Australia’s greatest Shakespearean directors, developed this “viscerally physical” (Sydney Morning Herald) production for Glyndebourne, working with Australian designers Ralph Myers and Alice Babidge to create a polished royal court with gloom at its core.

The challenging title part requires a great performer, and we’re thrilled to welcome Allan Clayton to his Sydney Opera House premiere. His Hamlet performance has been described as “tremendous” (The Guardian) and “mesmerising and monumental” (The Conversation). Lorina Gore reprises her “spellbinding” Helpmann Award-winning performance as Ophelia, with an exceptional cast. Tim Anderson, a contemporary opera specialist, conducts.
