Two orphans find their own way into adulthood in this moving, high-octane, and often hilarious coming-of-age drama, set amongst the steamy, tropical backstreets of Singapore’s criminal underworld.
Following a celebrated premiere season at Griffin Theatre Company, this transfer production of Golden Blood is the Sydney Theatre Company playwriting debut of Merlynn Tong, and a family story that is somehow both sweeping and intimate – partly inspired by events in Tong’s own life.
In a once-grand apartment, two estranged siblings – 14-year-old Girl (played by Tong) and 21-year-old Boy (Charles Wu) – are thrown back together after the unexpected death of their mother. The naïve but headstrong Girl elects Boy as her legal guardian. The only problem is that Boy is a fledgling gangster. The audience watches rapt as this unconventional family grows up, gets entangled in a darkly glamorous world of crime and luxury, and comes to confront the ghosts of their past.
Expertly directed by Tessa Leong, Golden Blood crackles brightly with mile-a-minute dialogue, sharply drawn characters, and a glittering portrait of a little-known world. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Tong’s thrilling voice as she emerges as a major force in the Australian playwriting landscape with this gripping tale about finding home in the big city.
