Sydney Town Hall’s clock tower rises 55m above George Street and was built using yellowblock sandstone quarried in Pyrmont.

Perched at the top of the tower is nearly 20 tonnes of clock and its bells. Meeting at the Sydney Town Hall steps to the time and bells has been part of the Sydney landscape for nearly 150 years.

The theme for this year’s History Week, Marking Time, offers us the opportunity to consider how we commemorate and mark time. Join master clockmaker, Andrew Markerink, for a lunchtime talk about Sydney’s many clocks, from the great Joyce clock at the General Post Office to Australia’s oldest functioning public clock at Hyde Park Barracks.

Andrew Markerink will take you on a journey through time and in just a tic you’ll end up peering into the hourglass through time itself.

Events In Sydney acknowledges and respects Aboriginal people as the state’s first people and nations and recognises Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners and occupants of New South Wales land and water.
