The National Indigenous Art Fair is an ethical marketplace hosted on Gadigal territory at Warrane’s (Sydney Cove) Overseas Passenger Terminal in The Rocks. The festival provides a rare opportunity to purchase artworks directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in rural community-owned art centres in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and regional and remote New South Wales.

The Art Fair is now in its fifth year and offers an entire weekend of Indigenous art, design, food, performances, and culture.

This year, participants will be able to eat and learn about native bush delicacies while hearing to the sounds of Stiff Gins and Microwave Jenny.

Throughout the weekend, there will be a free communal weaving circle, sandpainting with artist Walangari, and a unique Torres Strait Islander dancing class.

Garuwa Cultural Immersion will open the Art Fair on Saturday with a Smoking Ceremony and traditional dance, while Mimih Dancers, an interstate dance company located in the Northern Territory, will perform for the first time on Sunday.

Pre-book hands-on workshops, including an Ochre painting class, to learn traditional painting techniques and history with Kunwinjku artists from Injalak Arts Centre from West Arnhem Land; a children’s workshop with Indigenous artist and storyteller Amanda Reynolds to craft their very own wearable possum armband; and a weaving workshop with Regina Wilson, a fiber weaver from Durrmu Arts in Peppimenarti, using merrepen (sandpalm), which are hand harvested and traditional These can be booked at: www.niaf.com.au/workshops.
