From Arnhem Land to Sydney, discover the remarkable art of Yirrkala.

For than a century, Yirrkala artists have used art as a sort of cultural diplomacy, as a respectful statement of power in all its forms, from influence to authority, sovereignty, strength, energy, and pride.

Yolŋu power: the art of Yirrkala celebrates the exceptional artists of Yirrkala and the strength of their art from the 1940s to today. The show examines key times in Yirrkala’s history when artists consciously changed their approach, established new styles, or embraced new mediums. The display emphasizes familial bonds and cultural continuity by spanning numerous generations.

It also places individual artists’ work within the larger school of artists from Yirrkala and neighboring Miwatj Country, who have made significant contributions to both Australian and, increasingly, worldwide art.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka art center.

Events In Sydney acknowledges and respects Aboriginal people as the state’s first people and nations and recognises Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners and occupants of New South Wales land and water.
