Hidden Gems – Uncovering Forgotten Artists & Lost Stories
Hidden Gems is a thought-provoking exhibition that shines a light on local artists and makers whose lives and works have, until now, remained largely unknown.
Through fragments of history, surviving works, and community knowledge, this exhibition invites visitors to help piece together the stories of these overlooked creative voices.
Rediscovering Forgotten Artists
The exhibition features the work and legacy of several artists about whom very little is currently known, including:
- Ada Carlill
- Artah
- Marcel Leman
- Charles Dingwall
Each name represents a fragment of a larger story — artworks, references, and traces that hint at rich creative lives waiting to be rediscovered.
An Invitation to Share Knowledge
This exhibition is not only about what is known — but also about what is yet to be discovered.
Visitors are encouraged to share any information, memories, or insights they may have, helping to build a more complete understanding of these artists and their contributions.
The Story of Katherine Adams
A key highlight of Hidden Gems is the remarkable story of Katherine Adams, whose identity came to light through unexpected discoveries during a previous exhibition.
While displaying pieces of Taronga Zoo souvenir pottery, it was revealed that the works had been incorrectly attributed for decades. With the help of Adams’ descendants, a clearer picture of her life and contribution began to emerge.
This discovery not only corrected the historical record but also restored recognition to a maker whose work had long been overlooked.
What You’ll Discover
- Rare and little-known artworks by local creatives
- Archival research and rediscovered histories
- The process of correcting historical attribution errors
- Opportunities for community contribution and storytelling
Why This Exhibition Matters
Hidden Gems explores how easily creative legacies can be lost — and how community knowledge can help bring them back into focus.
It is an ongoing act of discovery, collaboration, and remembrance, celebrating the importance of preserving local artistic heritage.
