Inundated investigates the terrible effects of the 2022 floods in Lismore and the Northern Rivers region, as seen through the lens of Northern Rivers photographer Natalie Grono.
The show includes a sequence of 16 pictures (including the award-winning Peter takes a moment, which earned Grono the Nikon-Walkley Photo of the Year Award in 2022) that highlight the devastation while also praising the strength of locals who face tragedy together.
The Northern Rivers region of northern NSW has historically been prone to flooding, with record floods of 12.2m in 1954 and 1974; nevertheless, the 2022 floods reached an unfathomable 14.4m, considerably beyond the 100-year flood mark.
The exhibition is especially crucial as the Australian climate continues to change and floods grow more common around the world, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology stating in 2018 that heavy rainfall will become more extreme with each degree of global warming.
Inundated offers a rarely seen viewpoint on not only the aftermath but also the enormous water levels achieved during this horrific occurrence, allowing visitors to better grasp the gravity of the natural tragedy.
