Hiroshi Sugimoto, a photographer, has created some of the most iconic and well-known photographs in modern art during the last 50 years.
‘Time Machine’ is the internationally acclaimed artist’s largest exhibition to date, and it is only available in Sydney. This survey, which includes essential works from all of the artist’s main photographic series, focuses on Sugimoto’s philosophical yet lighthearted exploration of our concept of time and memory, as well as photography’s ability to document and invent.
Sugimoto has frequently returned to ideas and procedures from nineteenth-century photography, capturing themes such as dioramas, wax figures, and architecture, using a large-format camera and synthesizing his own darkroom chemicals. His work has stretched and reorganized the medium’s core principles of time, space, and light. Sugimoto believes that photography is ideally adapted to preserving and depicting the passage of time, acting as a time machine.
The exhibition is organized by the Hayward Gallery in London in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
