Chains of Empire delves at Australia’s involvement with the Atlantic Ocean slave trade and the consequences of Britain abolishing slavery throughout its empire in 1833.

This exhibit, created in collaboration with a team of Australia’s leading historians from the University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, and the University of Melbourne, and with First Nations guidance, reveals the legacies of British slavery in Australia while also highlighting the true stories of the trials and suffering of indentured workers.

Supported by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project DP200100094.

Please be aware that this exhibit may cause distress for some viewers. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that the exhibit contains references to and photographs of deceased ancestors.

Events In Sydney acknowledges and respects Aboriginal people as the state’s first people and nations and recognises Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners and occupants of New South Wales land and water.
