Emma Sandall confronts the vexatious question “should I have a child” in a performance that serves up an emotional and intellectual gut punch with a dose of black humour.

An Ambivalent Woman of 37 may well become the defining theatrical work on what has to be one of the most consequential decisions of adulthood. Based on Sheila Heti’s book ‘Motherhood’ creative director and performer Emma Sandall has worked with composer Elena Kats Chernin AO and pianist Yanghee Kim to create a highly original collision of animation, music and movement. Drawing inspiration from Monty Python and the golden era of silent film, the show takes the audience on a sometimes absurdist, often comic, and always deeply compassionate ride. Along the way, it challenges the idea of female fulfilment and sacrifice and who gets to define it.

Events In Sydney acknowledges and respects Aboriginal people as the state’s first people and nations and recognises Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners and occupants of New South Wales land and water.
