The Archibald Prize, established in 1921, is the country’s most popular and distinguished art prize. The award for best portrait painting goes to a who’s who of Australian culture, from politicians to celebrities, sporting stars to artists.
The Wynne Prize is given to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery or figure sculpture, whilst the Sulman Prize is given to the best subject painting, genre painting, or mural project in oil, acrylic, watercolor, or mixed media.
This year’s Archibald Prize, the country’s favourite and most prominent art award for portraiture, has been running since 1921 and will move you with new and familiar faces.
Each year, the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales judge the Archibald and Wynne awards, and an artist is invited to judge the Sulman.
The Wynne Prize for landscape painting of Australian scenery or figure sculpture, as well as the Sulman Prize for topic painting, genre painting, or a mural project, feature fascinating and diverse finalists’ works.
Visit the exhibition to vote for your favourite portrait in the ANZ People’s Choice award, as well as to see the Young Archies, which showcases the work of emerging painters ages 5 to 18.
