Burrawa – Aboriginal Climb Experience on the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Burrawa – Aboriginal Climb Experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ascend the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge while gaining a deeper understanding of Australia’s First Nations history, culture, and connection to Country.

Guided by a First Nations Storyteller alongside your experienced BridgeClimb guide, this immersive journey invites you to experience Sydney from a powerful and rarely seen Aboriginal perspective.

Climb Above Sydney with a Storyteller

As you make your way to the summit of the Harbour Bridge via the upper arch route, you will hear stories that span thousands of years — from ancient cultural traditions to contemporary Aboriginal life in Sydney today.

The experience is designed not only to showcase breathtaking panoramic views of Warrane (Sydney Harbour), but also to connect climbers with the deep cultural significance of the land and waterways below.

Meaning Behind Burrawa

The word Burrawa comes from an Aboriginal language meaning “above” or “upwards,” reflecting both the physical climb and the cultural elevation of perspective offered throughout the journey.

Participants are encouraged to see Sydney through an Aboriginal lens — understanding the harbour not just as a landmark, but as a living cultural landscape.

Stories of Country and Connection

During the climb, you will discover significant stories and places, including:

  • The Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and their enduring connection to Sydney
  • The relationship between language, place, and cultural memory
  • The story of Patyegarang and William Dawes and the early recording of the Sydney language
  • The origins of iconic harbour names such as Bennelong Point and Barangaroo

These narratives offer a deeper appreciation of Sydney’s landscape as a place of living history and cultural significance.

Climb Experience Details

  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours total (2 hours on the bridge)
  • Route: Fully guided climb along the upper arch to the summit
  • Group Size: Maximum 14 climbers for an intimate experience
  • Steps: 1,332 steps
  • Departures: Limited weekly daytime sessions only

A Unique Cultural Perspective

This is more than a climb — it is a cultural journey that connects visitors with the world’s oldest living cultures in one of the world’s most iconic locations.

Experience Sydney from above, and see the Harbour Bridge through the stories of its First Peoples.

Charity Contribution

A $20 donation from each climb supports BridgeClimb’s charity partner, Tribal Warrior, helping to strengthen and preserve Aboriginal culture and community programs.

Events In Sydney acknowledges and respects Aboriginal people as the state’s first people and nations and recognises Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners and occupants of New South Wales land and water.
