St Bedes Catholic Church – Appin, Sydney West

Historical Background

St Bede’s Catholic Church holds a special place in Australia’s Catholic heritage. It is widely regarded as the oldest Catholic church in continuous use on the Australian mainland. The parish began in the mid-1830s with informal Masses on Gordon’s Farm and later in a small cottage.

Father John Therry, a significant early Catholic figure in Australia, championed the construction of a proper church. In December 1837, the foundation stone was laid by Bishop John Bede Polding, and the church was officially opened on 8 October 1843.

Architecture & Heritage

St Bede’s is a stunning example of Regency Gothic architecture and is built of sandstone with a slate roof. Inside, the timber roof features an ogee-curved ceiling and carved wooden bosses. The Gothic screen behind the altar hides the sacristy, and the richly carved windows showcase remarkable detail.

The church is classified by the National Trust for its architectural and historical significance and has been carefully preserved with restoration work completed in 1999-2000.

Prior to the construction of St. Bede’s, Fr. John Summer was appointed as Appin Parish Priest in 1835, and mass was held at Gordon’s Farm. By 1838, mass was being held in a cottage before Father John Therry decided to erect a church at Appin. With community support and more than AUD300 in donations, the dream became a reality. On December 18, 1837, the “Sydney Morning Herald” reported that “Bishop Polding laid the foundation for the Roman Catholic Chapel at Appin last week.”

The official opening of St Bede’s Catholic Church took place on October 8, 1843. Restoration work began in 1999, and the formal opening occurred in early 2000.
